🏊‍♀️ Swim Test Protocol — 25 Yard Pool

Purpose

To assess a swimmer’s ability to demonstrate independent swimming skills, safety knowledge, and endurance before advancing to deeper water or independent swim participation.

Test Overview

Each swimmer will complete a series of skills that demonstrate control, comfort, and safety awareness in the water.

Passing requires:

✅ Continuous swim (there and back) – 50 total

✅ Floating calmly for 60 seconds without assistance

✅ Retrieving an object from the 4-ft area

✅ No wall contact during test (except start & finish)

✅ All skills completed confidently and safely

Swimmers are allowed up to 3 attempts per session.

If the swimmer is unable to complete all skills in 3 attempts, they will be asked to practice and try again another day.

Minimum time allowed per attempt: 15 minutes.

Skills we work toward in class to pass…

Skill #1 – Continuous Swim (Endurance & Confidence)

Goal: Swim 25 yards down and 25 yards back (total 50 yards) without assistance or wall touch.

Swimmer may use any stroke (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, etc.). Must demonstrate rhythmic breathing (face in water and exhale, then inhale). May stop and float or tread mid-length, but may not touch the wall, lane line, or bottom. Passing = completes both lengths with control and no assistance.

Skill #2 – Float or Survival Float (Safety Knowledge)

Goal: Float or tread in deep or mid-depth water for 60 seconds.

May choose back float, star float, or vertical tread position. Swimmer must demonstrate relaxation, control, and safety posture. No support from wall, bottom, or instructor. Instructor may verbally cue for calm breathing and positioning.

Skill #3 – Object Retrieval (Underwater Comfort & Control)

Goal: Retrieve a weighted toy or ring from 4-foot depth.

Swimmer begins at surface, submerges fully, and retrieves object from bottom. Must return object to surface independently. Demonstrates ability to open eyes underwater and maintain control.

Evaluation & Attempts

Each swimmer has up to three attempts in a session.

A minimum of 15 minutes will be allotted per swimmer for rest, reset, and encouragement between attempts.

If a swimmer does not meet all criteria:

Encourage practice on endurance, floating, and breathing control. Reattempt on a later date when skills are stronger.

Safety & Compliance

This swim test follows USMS, Red Cross, and USA Swimming standards for shallow-water assessment and safety screening.

All tests must be observed by a certified instructor or lifeguard, with emergency equipment present

📌 Reminder: Each Open Swim has a limit on attendance. Please book your space and the number of guests when reserving.
